City Council gets it right in honoring Jack Allen
Jack Allen was a member of the Decatur City Council for nearly a quarter of century during a time when the city saw great growth.
He always came down on the side of spending money conservatively, but he never forgot the need for recreation facilities.
He retired in 2000 after serving almost two terms as council president. Since then, Mr. Allen has quietly enjoyed retirement and continues his interest in sports.
The City Council this week honored him by naming the new southwest recreation center in his honor. It's a state-of-the-art complex of lighted soccer and football fields that are the envy of any community, big or small.
The surprise announcement no doubt pleased him. He earned the honor.
