The march to Republican Party continues in Morgan

Why local public officials become Republicans is easy to understand. Morgan County has become a Republican stronghold in an increasingly Republican state. Switching parties gives weaker incumbents a decided advantage.

District 1 County Commissioner Jeff Clark became the latest official to switch, doing so this week and making the County Commission unanimously Republican.

County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman Brian Oakes was clearly miffed at Mr. Clark, and reacted. Like Mr. Oakes, many people wonder why so many of those who jump parties can't do so without name calling, specifically suggesting Republican morals are superior to those of Democrats.

In reality, party switching is about getting elected or re-elected.
