Welcome, Del Monte, to Morgan County

Since the 1880s, Del Monte has provided meals for millions of families. To those people, the brand name meant quality. It still does.

Thus, the announcement that Del Monte Foods Co. will buy Decatur's Meow Mix plant means continuation of a quality operation.

Terry Gallagher, vice president of Del Monte pet product operation, said the company has no plans to reduce employment, but suggested the number of people working there could increase above the present 150.

In leaving, Meow Mix Holdings chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Thompson, had nice things to say about Decatur.

"I've opened plants in 12 different locations and Decatur is hands-down the best place to do business," he said.

Thus, having a company of Del Monte's reputation come to town and a departing company executive offer such high praise is as about as good as it gets for a community that prides itself on its reputation for being the home of Fortune 500 companies.
