Board likes calm way Morton runs schools

State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton doesnít get as excited as his predecessor and his bosses apparently like the change.

The State Board of Education gave Mr. Morton a raise and contract extension last week.

Mr. Mortonís management style is, indeed, a contrast to how Auburn University President Ed Richardson handled schools before he changed jobs in 2004.

Mr. Richardson appeared to never meet a controversy he didnít relish. Mr. Morton goes the other way, while also being an effective leader.

His four-year contract extension comes with a 3.5 percent raise Jan. 1 and another one Jan. 1, 2008.

School board members want to keep a good thing going, and schools are making progress in the more stable environment.
