Firefighters battle blaze, but also face unknowns

The Dailyís front page picture of the exploding propane gas truck on Wilhite Road at Lacon on Monday captured not only the tragedy of a young father losing his life, but the danger that firefighters face every day.

Staff photographer Emily Saunders caught the drama of two firefighters retreating, not fleeing, from the danger of the inferno of the exploding 2,000-gallon tank.

Moments earlier they were spraying water on the fire and trying to save the driver. Imagine the heat from the ball of flames that shot some 50 feet in the air! Imagine the threat of an even greater follow-up blast!

Firefighters from several departments helped shuttle water to the remote location to contain the fire while the gas burned out.

Through training and experience, they know how to attack fire, but firefighters always face an unknown element when they go to the site of a blaze.
