Creating Lawrence board a power grab

Backdoor robbery. Another pork barrel. To buy votes.

Those are terms some public officials in Lawrence County used to describe a noble-sounding board that will function for the purposes of their state legislators.

Rep. Jody Letson and Sens. Roger Bedford and Zeb Little proposed the Lawrence County Economic Development Board, whose members they would appoint. They would take an increase in TVA money coming to the Lawrence County Commission in lieu of taxes, and spend it however they choose under the guise of economic development.

County and Moulton officials don't want the proposal to pass and are asking citizens to oppose creating the board.

If the bill fails, perhaps the trio can try again next year and call it the Lawrence County Anti-Terrorism Commission.
