Politics, not justice, at stake for senator
Idaho's Sen. Larry Craig continues to try to manipulate the judicial system to serve his political purposes. The Republican pleaded guilty in a sex sting at a Minneapolis airport restroom because he thought that would be the best way to quietly handle his alleged indiscretion and keep it secret. That was in June, and his decision appeared to have been a good one until the press got wind of his guilty plea weeks later. Then his Republican colleagues pushed him into making a quick decision to resign his Senate seat Sept. 30. Now he wants to rescind all of this summer's missteps. He doesn't want to resign and he wants Hennepin County Judge Charles Porter to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea so he can defend himself against implications that he is a homosexual. Needless to say, the senator wouldn't be trying to withdraw his guilty plea if the media hadn't found out and his colleagues hadn't pressured him to get out quickly. Those circumstances make his guilty plea a case of politics rather than of justice.
