Cage fighting can become violent, should be regulated
The attorney general’s opinion to the city of Hartselle this week on cage fighting uncovers an area of concern.
Apparently marital arts, or cage fighting, lacks oversight. The attorney general said the Alabama Athletic Commission regulates only boxing and wrestling.
That leaves Hartselle to regulate the sport in that city, including licensing and taxing. But what about the state?
The city has been in dispute with promoter Robert Clairday for months about his events in Hartselle. Now, he says, he may move to other cities, and has an event at Priceville arena Saturday night.
Some states and cities are starting to impose regulations. Perhaps it is time for Alabama to do so. It’s often a violent sport that can’t just be out there.
