LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

More buildings, businesses needed in downtown area

To The Daily: In the last few months, downtown Decatur has often been mentioned, some critical and some optimistic. Ralph and Glenna Jones have been optimistic. We confirmed some of this optimism on Feb. 20 when we were having lunch at the Mexican restaurant that had just recently opened for business at the corner of Second Avenue Southeast and E. Moulton Street.

Their first night, they had an overflowing crowd of diners — at noon on Feb. 20, it was full. The food was super.

Glenna and I had the opportunity of meeting the owners, Jorge and Oscar, two young men with a vision and a determination to make their restaurant one of the best. They chose downtown because they could see its potential.

At this point, we need more buildings downtown — lots are available. A few months ago, our buildings burned. Glenna and I had to make a decision: rebuild or leave another gaping hole on Second Avenue. We chose to rebuild. The first two units are now open and we have a waiting list for other units.

Downtown needs more buildings bringing more people to profit and continue to bring back the stature of Decatur. Lots are available.

G. Ralph Jones
