Pay hike to haunt state legislators

To The Daily: The 62 percent pay raise that state legislators passed will come back to haunt them. But that will be good for Alabama.

One thing the Alabama Legislature has always been good at doing is taking care of themselves. For example, the series of horror stories from last year revealing that many members are double dipping through high-paying community college jobs and various other state jobs.

Also, many of the members raise huge sums of money from dubious and hard-to-trace sources, and who knows what they really do with all of it?

While I doubt the Alabama Legislature truly deserved any raise, I really wouldn’t have minded if they had given themselves a modest raise, phased in over a few years with no annual “cost of living” adjustment. Now they have totally ignored the public opinion that over 80 percent of Alabamians polled were in opposition to the pay raise, it is high time the people of this state take their government back.

The legislators had better enjoy their 62 percent raise for the remainder of their terms.

They have given a huge incentive for quality opposition, and have handed their future opponents plenty of ammunition for the coming legislative elections.

I believe many of them will be defeated because of their greed — then they won’t have to worry so much about all of those “expenses” that they keep whining about related to their part-time job!
