Gaines to speak at 'Sunday on Monday'

Sunday night just won't be the same at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Moulton.

For one, it will be on Monday.

The church is scheduling "Sunday on Monday" events quarterly with special guests, said the Rev. Neil Carter, associate pastor. Some of the region's best-known Baptist preachers have spoken, including the Rev. Junior Hill of Hartselle.

The Rev. Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, will preach this Monday at 7 p.m.

Gaines was formerly pastor of Gardendale First Baptist Church north of Birmingham.

The church grew to a 3,300 average Sunday attendance and led the Alabama Baptist Convention several years in baptisms.

Gaines, who earned a doctor of philosophy degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, became pastor of Bellevue in 2005.

Bellevue has recently made headlines, in part over a former staff member's confession that he once sexually abused his son.

Pleasant Grove's address is 11450 Alabama 33.
