First impressions

Like an usher’s greeting or the sanctuary’s appearance, publications are important to first impressions, said the Rev. Milton Proctor of Garner Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

The church has a colorful bulletin/newsletter that Proctor said he designs and prints each week on his home equipment.

Proctor said he uses a computer, PageMaker software, a scanner and a color printer. Proctor said he prints about 55 copies a week and has learned techniques to keep costs down, such as using an ink-saving setting to make cartridges last longer.

The labor on the publications is worth it, the pastor said.

“We try to make them attractive and unique and a blessing,” Proctor said.

He prints a color photo related to a church activity on the front page each week. A recent one pictured youths attending the Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast.

Proctor said a 15-year-old in his church is helping him teach a computer class for the congregation, and one of the goals he’s set for pupils is to learn to do the bulletin.
