Singer David Phelps to perform in Decatur

Try for Broadway? Aim for a career in classical music?

Singer David Phelps of Nashville, who will be in concert March 30 in Decatur, said teachers pushed him to try one or the other.

The singer grew up in Houston and studied music at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He said he always wanted to sing Christian music.

In 1996 he got a meeting with Word Records and learned about on opening with the Gaither Vocal Band. He joined the group two weeks later and helped make numerous gold- and platinum-selling recordings that won two Grammy awards and four Dove awards.

Now a solo performer, Phelps has recorded several CDs that include his own songs.

His performance will be at Decatur First Baptist Church on March 30 at 7 p.m.
