An Adventist Church expo on Sunday and a fair at a Methodist church Aug. 25 are two opportunities to check your health, for free.
Decatur Seventh-day Adventist Church, 540 Beltline Road S.W., is holding a Health and Wellness Expo on Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., sponsored by a hospital and a health institution.
Planners are offering free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, lung capacity checks, chair massages and professional counseling. The church is also offering chair massages and vegetarian dishes to sample, according to Cheri Lawson of the church.
Sponsors are the Wildwood Lifestyle Center and Hospital and the College of Health Evangelism of Wildwood, Ga.
Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church's Health Fair and Band Bash will be at the church, 1211 Westmeade St. S.W., Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Blood pressure, glucose levels, sleep disorder risk, hearing and other screenings will be offered.
Also available will be stress tests and body composition analysis. Screening and testing providers are Decatur General Hospital, Parkway Medical Center and The Hearing Center.
The fair and a hot dog lunch are free. The church praise band will perform.
A barbecue chicken plate lunch also will be available at a cost of $5 per plate. Proceeds will help fund the Peacekeeper Award that Wesley gives to area high school seniors.
Susan Behrendt and Jo Ann Griffith of Wesley said the award recognizes students who demonstrate interest in keeping the school nonviolent, promote racial harmony, exhibit strong student/teacher relations, show strong moral values and ethical behavior, and have good leadership abilities.
Two students from Austin High School, Darvius Crayton and Taryn Hill, were the first recipients this year of the cash award. The church may expand the award to other schools.
Teachers recommend and vote on recipients.
