Episcopalians to pick bishop
Six people are nominees for suffragan, or assistant, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama.
The election will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham.
Four of the nominees are rectors serving Alabama parishes.
The Rev. John McKee Sloan serves at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Huntsville. William Marc Burnette is at St. Andrew’s Church in Birmingham.
The Rev. Robert Childers is rector of Grace Church, Anniston. The Rev. Patrick J. Wingo serves St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Birmingham.
Another rector, the Rev. William Waldo, serves a parish in Excelsior, Minn. The Rev. Alicia Schuster-Weltner, is canon for congregational development in the Diocese of Atlanta.
Installation will be Jan. 12.
Christmas Child rally is Oct. 6
St. Luke United Methodist Church, 3014 Danville Road S.W., will have a celebration rally for Operation Christmas Child on Oct. 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The church will be a collection center for the project, which sends shoeboxes filled with gifts to needy children in many countries.
The church will have food, entertainment and a speaker from Operation Christmas Child, which is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse.
The collection of shoebox gifts will be Nov. 12-17, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nov. 18, 1 to 6 p.m., and Nov. 19, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 355-9381.
