Speake slips by ABS

Zack Taylor scored 21 points and Juarez Fitzgerald added 17 as Speake defeated Athens Bible 63-57 in overtime in the opening round of the Class 1A, Area 15 boys tournament. The Bobcats improved to 10-13.

Cody Nave led Athens Bible with 21 points, Jacob Frazier pitched in 14 points and 12 rebounds and David Croomes put in 14 points.

Speake plays Decatur Heritage on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

Class 2A, Area 14 Boys

  • Falkville 47, Columbia 43: Cody Sewell scored 10 points and dished out seven assists as Falkville moved into the semifinals of the area tournament, where it will face Westminster on Friday at 6.

    Also for Falkville (15-10), Heath Alford scored 11 while Adam Dye and Stephen Hogan each added 10.

    Jonathan McCowan led Columbia with 17 points.

    Class 2A, Area 15 Boys

  • Clements 70, Hatton 48: Gerard Robinson led the Colts with 25 points and Blake Moore added 17 as Clements moved into the area tournament semifinals.

    Jordan Waldrep led Hatton with 14.

    Class 2A, Area 15 Girls

  • Hatton 56, Clements 43: Kayla Burden picked up a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to pace Hatton to an opening-round win. Chloe Malone added 10 points and eight rebounds and Kaitlyn Fleming had eight points and eight boards.

    For Clements, Jordan Beggs netted 15 points and LaCresha Petty had 10.

    Hatton (14-14) now has the task of taking on top-seeded Tanner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
