Lady Warhawks unbeaten in conference play

GADSDEN — Calhoun Community College's softball team scored a doubleheader win over Gadsden State 3-0 and 4-3 on Tuesday.
The sweep makes Calhoun 18-5 overall and 8-0 in the Alabama Community College Conference.
In the first game, Breanna Lee pitched the shutout in the first game as she scattered five hits over seven innings. In addition, she was 1-for-2 at the plate with a second-inning double.
Jessi Nelson drove in Lee for the first run with a double to right field. In the sixth inning, the Lady Warhawks scored twice as Kala Weatherly reached on an error, Jenea Stephenson sacrificed her to second base and then Racheal Carden tripled. Carden scored on Stevie Griffin's single.
Calhoun also collected hits from Weatherly (double) and Lacey Keenum (single).
The Lady Warhawks won the second game in eight innings. After seven innings, the two teams were tied 2-2.
With the two teams using the international tiebreaker rule, Calhoun's Laura Leigh Keenum started the eighth inning on second base as a pinch-runner for Nelson.
Lindsey Lowery sacrificed her to third base and Lacey Keenum drove in her sister with a double down the third-base line for her first hit of the game.
Lacey Keenum then scored on a single by Kala Weatherly.
Gadsden scored once in the bottom of the inning off Lee, who relieved starting pitcher Alicia Hall in the sixth inning. However, Lee snuffed the rally with two runners left on base when she got the last batter to ground out back to her.
Other hitters for the Lady Warhawks were Brittany Norton (two singles), Stephenson (one single), Carden (one single), Lee (one double) and Nelson with a triple that scored Lee and Stevie Griffin, who had reached on a walk.
The Lady Warhawks will host Bevill State-Sumiton at 4 p.m. Thursday, Alabama Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Jefferson State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. All games will be played at Wilson Morgan Park.
