Baseball

  • The Morgan County Parks and Recreation Department is looking for youth baseball umpires. Anyone interested in assisting with the youth league should contact Bruce Lackey at 773-2564.
  • East Lawrence High baseball coach Rob Cosby will direct a regional program for the Midwest Baseball Academy spring training.
  • The six-week program in Caddo will run from Jan. 27 to March 3 at East Lawrence High.

    The player-coach ratio is six to one, and instruction will include drills to teach a different aspect of hitting, pitching and fielding.

  • The University of North Alabama will host its Christmas Baseball Camp on Wednesday through Saturday.

    Session I is for ages 13 to high school seniors. Session II is for ages 7 to 12.

  • The camp will be in Flowers Hall on the UNA campus.

    The camp costs are $150 without lunch, $170 with lunch and $200 for overnight. The overnight camp has 24-hour supervision and night activities.

    Late registration will be Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. for session I and Friday at 8:30 a.m. for session II.

    Basketball

  • The Austin Basketball Christmas Camp will be Dec. 20-22 for players in second through sixth grades. Austin High varsity girls basketball coach Bruce Hamilton is the camp director.
  • The camp will be at Austin High from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day, and the cost is $35. Late registration will happen on the first day of the camp at 8 a.m.

  • The Tennessee Valley Basketball Association is accepting teams for its winter league.
  • Anyone wanting to register there grade school teams can contact Dale Liles at 383-8228 or David Cox at 247-1049.

    Golf

    Robert Oakley, Taco Yancy, Shelton Bettis and Dean Parrish fired a 64 to win the Point Mallard Independent Golf Associationís monthly tournament recently.

    The event was a four-man scramble at Point Mallard Golf Course, and 14 teams competed.

    Two teams tied for second place by shooting 65. Gary Morris, Bill Brunner and Billy Don Looney made up one team, and Charles Rankin, Buck Martin, Buddy Tennimom and Jack Beasley made up another.

    In fourth Place, Bull Terry, J.O. Mitchell, Dave Dobbs and Joe Stover shot a 66.

    John Broadwell, Bernie Taylor and Bob Koenig shot a 67 to tie for fifth place with the team of Walt Schrimsher, Bob Labus, John Mullican and George Godwin.

    Closest-to-the-pin winners on par-3 holes included Ross Malone (No. 3), Taco Yancy (No. 8), Dan Nelson (No. 11) and Bob Labus (No. 13).

    Disc golf

    The North Alabama Boys and Girls Club will be benefactors of the Professional Disc Golf Associationís tournament in Athens on Feb. 24.

    The tournament will feature two, 19-hole PDGA sanctioned rounds; C-tier for pros and B-tier for amateurs.

    Soccer

    The Huntsville Senior Soccer League is looking for men and women 40 years old or older who want to play recreational soccer. All skill levels are welcome to join. The league plays Sundays at 4 p.m. next to the Huntsville Iceplex on Leeman Ferry Road.

  • The River City Raptors 97 (10-and-under) girls soccer team defended its state title by winning the Governorís Cup in Trussville, on Nov. 10-12.
  • The Raptors defeated Mountain Brook Ladybugs, North Alabama United Lady Freedom, and Mobile Soccer Club to claim the championship.

    Ken Knable and Jeff Johnson coach the Raptors 97.

    Team members include Summer Bell, Krystyn Chambers, Sophie Johnson, Haley Knable, Lily Sherrill, Mary Charles Stewart, Chandler Turner, Alison Varner and Julia Wallace.

    Tennis

    The Decatur fall tennis season ended recently. The league winners, which are eligible to compete in the state tournament, include:

    2.5 women: State-bound Steelers with players Brenda Baird, Shelley Cooper (captain), Lisa Eyster, Sheila McCaig, Beth Michetti and Leesa Ray.

    3.0 women: Southern aces 3.0 with players Carmen Adams, Ellen Bean, Shellee Blaxton, Jill Cook, Heather Kyle, Bridget Montgomery, Ginny Pylant, Lori Riant, Tracie Rosencrance, Linda Sparks, Jodi Suggs, Sabrina Weaver and Jennifer Wood (captain).

    3.5 women: Ball Busters with players Carah Billups, Diane Bryant, Terry Collis, Debby Crowell, Jennifer Denton, Beth Hall, Maggie Hartman, Susan Johnson, Bridget Keown and Rhonda Wagner (captain).

    4.0 women: Decatur Lightning with players Lisanne Brown, Shannon Caretti, Ann Copeland, Susie Humphries, Andrea Jones, Regina Light (captain), Joan Lopez, Cheryl Meyer, Cathy Pruitt, Diane Sapp, Kim Starkey, Becky Stevens and Tracy Swann.
