Athens twosome make Super 12
8 others from area on all-state first team

More honors roll in for Athens High’s football team today with two Golden Eagles landing on the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state football team Super 12.

Quarterback Rob Ezell and lineman Alfred McCullough made the squad after leading Athens to a Class 5A state championship this season.

Ezell passed for 2,700 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, while rushing for 843 yards and six scores. He finished the season as the state’s all-time leader in total offense and was named MVP of the 5A state championship game.

McCullough, who has committed to play at Alabama, had 13 sacks this season. He also totaled 89 tackles and caused two fumbles.

A pair of teammates joined Ezell and McCullough on the 5A all-state first team. Wide receiver Jacquez Pride and lineman Karlos Jones made the team.

Six others from The Daily’s coverage area also made one of the all-state first-team squads.

In 4A, East Limestone linebacker Cameron Nye made first team. In 3A, Clements linebacker Brad Smith took a spot, while in 2A, a trio from the area found places on the first team, including Addison running back Blake Turner, Addison lineman Ace Beam and Tanner lineman Matt Smith.

In 1A, Speake defensive lineman Javaris Stover gained a first-team spot.

Eight others from the area made honorable mention, including a Decatur pair. Lineman Caleb Thomas and linebacker Rolando McClain made the 5A list. Hartselle linebacker Caleb Blanton made it as well.

Ardmore running back Derrick Green made honorable mention in 4A. Clements teammates Jeremy Craig, a receiver, and Josh Cooper, a place-kicker, made the 3A list. Speake running back Nick Borden made in 1A, as did R.A. Hubbard linebacker Josh Draper.
