Austin knocks off No. 7 Homewood
Tanner boys place 2nd at Sparkman, Austin girls 4th in tournament

Austin High’s unranked boys basketball team shot 72 percent in the second half to score a 59-53 upset win over No. 7 Homewood on Saturday.

The game gave the Black Bears third place in the Sneaky Pete’s Classic at Spain Park High.

George Williams poured in 14 points for Austin (8-4), while Travis Cohn had 13 points, six assists and four steals. Verkeneo Mann had 12 points and four assists.

Homewood limited Austin’s Jay Sears to five points, but Sears passed out six assists.

Austin led only 26-24 at halftime before outscoring Homewood 16-11 in the third quarter.

For Homewood, Ronald Nored had 26 points.

Sparkman 58, Tanner 47: Host Sparkman won the Senator Holiday Classic with a victory over Tanner, which is ranked No. 8 in Class 2A.

The Class 6A Senators (11-4) got 26 points from Bucknell signee G.W. Boon and 12 from Jusmon Rivers.

For Tanner (10-4), Rod Byrd had 20 points, and Demarcus King scored nine.

Latraius Mosley had a team-high nine rebounds to go with his six points.


Lincoln County (Tenn.) girls 39, Austin 34: The Lady Black Bears finished fourth in the Huntsville Times Classic after falling in the consolation game Saturday.

Austin (9-6) got 10 points each from Jazmine Powers and Andrea Crayton. China McDaniel pulled down nine rebounds, and Powers and McDaniel each had three assists.

Lincoln County’s Savannah Hill, a Samford signee, had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Austin will play again Wednesday in Decatur High’s River City Classic against Carver-Montgomery at 6:30 p.m.

Madison Academy 49, Athens Bible 28: Kirsten McClure had 16 points and eight steals for Athens Bible (3-12) in a loss to Madison Academy (6-4).

Christina Ivey pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Madison Academy got at least two points from nine different players. Haley Stewart led the way with 10 points.
