On the road, Decatur rips Russellville

From Staff Reports

RUSSELLVILLE — After losing two of three in the recent Huntsville Times Classic, Decatur High’s boys basketball team bounced back with a 69-47 road win Tuesday at Russellville.

Decatur (12-4) dominated a team that entered with a 9-2 record and recently had won Brewer’s Big Blue Classic.

“We really played together on the offensive end and the defensive end,” Lee said.

And that downswing in the Huntsville Times Classic apparently served as motivation.

“After the tournament, we went back into the gym and got back to what we were doing earlier in the year,” Decatur coach Jamie Lee said.

It couldn’t have come at a better time for the Red Raiders.

Winning Tuesday made Decatur 3-0 in Class 5A, Area 16 with one win against each of the area opponents — Russellville, Athens and Muscle Shoals.

“That’s big for us, and we told the kids that,” Lee said.

Decatur still must play Muscle Shoals on the road, and Russellville and Athens will visit the Red Raiders.

On Tuesday, Decatur led Russellville 31-22 at halftime and then finished strong.

Offensively, the Red Raiders distributed the ball well, compiling 30 field goals and 24 assists.

Lee said he liked that ratio.

“We really shared the ball well,” Lee said.

Rico Pickett had 13 points and team highs in rebounds (10), assists (nine) and blocked shots (three).

Mark Mason and Jarodiaus Willingham tied for team-high scoring honors with 17 points each.

Willingham added nine rebounds.

Nate Dunsten paced Russellville with 10 points.

Russellville girls 55, Decatur 43: Ashley Henderson scored 14 points to pace the Lady Red Raiders (1-15), and Brittney McCloud added 11.

However, Russellville limited everyone else to six points or less.

For the winners, Jordan Dollar scored 22 points, and Sasha Willingham had 14.
