West sinks two treys as Samford nips Jacksonville State

Chris West scored two 3-pointers in the final nine seconds to lift Samford to a 64-63 come-from-behind victory in Birmingham on Saturday.
Samford (9-6, 6-0 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed 63-58 with 1:33 left in the game, but West’s first 3-pointer at the nine second mark pulled them within two. West scored again with one second left on the clock to secure the win.
Randall Gulina led the Bulldogs with 18 points while Travis Peterson added 14 and Joe Ross Merritt followed with 12.
Jacksonville State (3-12, 1-5) shot 64.4 percent from the field in the game and led 47-40 at the half. Harold Crow led four Jacksonville State players in double-digit scoring with 18 points. Courtney Bradley scored 15 and Dorien Brown added 12, followed by Will Ginn with 11.
Mississippi Valley St. 55, Alabama A&M 41: Jefferey Price scored 12 points and Mississippi Valley State forced 22 turnovers in its Southwestern Athletic Conference opener.
The Delta Devils’ defense tallied 13 steals and held the Bulldogs to 24 percent shooting in the first half as they took a 31-17 lead at halftime. Neither team shot better than 32 percent in the game.
Richard Cannon added eight points and five rebounds for Mississippi Valley State (4-9, 1-0 SWAC), which had 11 turnovers to 12 assists.
Cornelius Hester scored 11 points and LaNorris Smith added 10 for Alabama A&M (5-8, 0-2), which hit 3-of-18 3-pointers.
Troy 71, Middle Tennessee 57: At Murfreesboro, Tenn., Richard Chaney scored 15 points for Troy, which had five players with double-digit scoring. Cedric Jackson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Troy (7-9, 2-3 Sun Belt). Boo Ramsey had 14 points and Justin Jonus and O’Darien Bassett each added 12.
