Steele, Smart, Thompson join football staff
By Josh Cooper
TUSCALOOSA — Alabama officially sent word on assistants hired by coach Nick Saban.
As has been reported for several days, a university press release indicated that Kevin Steele, Kirby Smart and Lance Thompson have joined the Crimson Tide football staff.
The release did not indicate what positions the three coaches will have, though sources indicate that Steele will be defensive coordinator.
It is unknown as to which positions Thompson and Smart will have.
No official word has been released as to what other assistants have been hired.
Many of Alabama’s former assistant coaches are in San Antonio for a coaching convention.
According to sources, none of the former assistants have been offered a job on Saban’s staff.
Todd Alles, who also was hired by Saban recently to be head of football operations, was not in attendance for Monday night’s 41-14 Florida victory over Ohio State in the BCS national championship game.
Alles formerly held the same position at Ohio State
Saban reportedly requested Alles leave his former position immediately to join the Alabama staff.
The new Tide coach was introduced at halftime of Alabama’s 71-61 victory over LSU on Tuesday.
There was some question as to whether Saban would be there and upstage his former school, LSU.
But he was certain to thank and reference his former school, while also firing up the Alabama fans with his goals for the Crimson Tide’s future.
“Let’s all work together to make a difference,” Saban said. “And show ’em what we got!”
