Muscle Shoals’ sweep spoils homecoming at Decatur Heritage

Decatur Heritage’s homecoming ended on a sour note Saturday night as Muscle Shoals defeated the Eagles 73-62 in boys high school basketball action.
Muscle Shoals (20-2) entered as the 10th-ranked team in Class 5A, while Decatur Heritage (14-10) holds the No. 9 spot in 1A.
“Our guys played hard and with a lot of heart,” head coach Tommy Kyle said. “We had nine turnovers during the first quarter and that hurt us.”
Dennis Conner’s Muscle Shoals squad led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and went on a 24-19 run in the second quarter to lead 35-26 at the half.
“Dennis does a good job with his guys,” Kyle said. “This is one of their best teams they have had in years.”
Decatur Heritage managed to cut the lead to seven several times in the third quarter, but Muscle Shoals managed to keep the Eagles from getting closer.
The Trojans finished off the win by outscoring Decatur Heritage 19-17 in the final period.
“When you play stiff competition like Muscle Shoals, you know you’ve got to play hard,” Kyle said.
“There were quite a few fouls in the fourth quarter, but when you play aggressive you’re going to have fouls.”
De’el Watkins led Decatur Heritage with 19 points and six rebounds. Nik Butz followed with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Ralston Turner and Greg Johnson both had 16 points to lead the Trojans. Reed Morgan added 13.
The Eagles will host Tharptown of Franklin County in a Class 1A, Area 15 matchup Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Muscle Shoals girls 51, Decatur Heritage 40: Candace Lee’s classmates voted her homecoming queen, and she followed up by pacing Decatur Heritage in scoring (21 points), rebounding (seven) and steals (three).
But it wasn’t enough to hold off Muscle Shoals (8-10), which was coming off a win over rival Russellville on Friday.
Lou Ellen Thompson added eight points for Decatur Heritage (9-11).
Kayla Hill led the Lady Trojans with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Lindsay Hayes contributed with 10 points and six rebounds.
