Austin girls roll on road

Austin High’s girls basketball team outbattled Huntsville for a 45-37 road win Tuesday.

The Lady Black Bears (13-13) bounced back from two tough losses, falling by 28 points to Sparkman on Friday night and then losing by three to Brewer on a last-second 3-pointer Saturday afternoon.

“This was a very similar game to Saturday,” Austin coach Bruce Hamilton said. “We missed some free throws, but we played better down the stretch.”

China McDaniel led
Austin with 13 points, and
Chasity Stover added eight points.

Nikkia Jordan pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go with her eight points.

For Huntsville, Courtney Sparkman had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Austin will host Bob Jones on Friday.

Huntsville boys 64, Austin 60: A short-handed Austin High boys team got down early and rallied but couldn’t catch the Panthers.

Verkeneo Mann paced Austin (13-10) with 23 points, while George Williams added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jay Watkins contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Black Bears fell behind 39-27 at the end of the first half before outscoring Huntsville after intermission.

“We had some younger guys who played hard,” Austin coach Demond Garth said. “Verkeneo hit some shots.”

Austin played without starters Jay Sears and Travis Cohn, who sat out because of coach’s decision. Point guard Quez Powell sprained his ankle early in the third quarter and didn’t return.

“We ended up playing only six or seven guys,” Garth said.

Other boys games

The Decatur Heritage boys basketball team thumped Tharptown 75-23 at home Tuesday night.

Decatur Heritage led 22-7 after a quarter and 42-9 at halftime.

Michael Brown put together a stellar night for the Eagles (15-10), who are ranked ninth in Class 1A. Brown had 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots.

Nik Butz had 14 points, and Daniel Long passed out nine
assists to go with his five points.

Joe Thomas scored eight points and made a team-high seven steals.

Tharptown’s Trevor Hallmark led his team with seven points.

Flint Hill Christian 63, Cornerstone Christian 59: Ben Roberts had 20 points and six steals for Cornerstone Christian (12-3), while Brett Stowe added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Jason Clark contributed 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Other girls game

Decatur Heritage 47, Tharptown 34: The Lady Eagles’ leading scorer, Candace Lee, had another solid game with 26 points and eight rebounds.

She attempted eight free throws and sank seven.

Brittany Denson added 12 points and six rebounds for Decatur Heritage (10-11, 5-3 in 1A, Area 15). Shayna Voss pulled down seven rebounds.
