PREP ROUNDUP
Lee passes 1,500
points for career

From Staff Reports

Decatur Heritage senior Candace Lee poured in 22 points and reached a career scoring milestone in the Lady Eagles' 48-44 home win over Westminster Christian on Friday.

Lee, a 5-foot-7 guard, passed the 1,500-point plateau. She now has 1,518 for her career.

In addition, she pulled down five rebounds and passed out five assists for Decatur Heritage (12-13).

"She's meant everything to us," Decatur Heritage coach John Cochran said. "She has been a six-year starter — she's started since she was in seventh grade.

"She's had to overcome facing double-teams every game. She's overcome having to shoulder a lot of the scoring load, like in a game earlier this year against Athens when we had 32 points, and she had 26 of them."

Cochran added that Lee is a straight-A student and was voted homecoming queen this year. "Those are things that exemplify what kind of person she is," Cochran said.

Lee got plenty of help in Friday's victory, however.

Brittany Denson had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Lou Ellen Thompson added seven points.

Westminster Christian (22-4) got 15 points apiece from Marlanne Johnson and Mandy Lowman.

Arab 53, Hartselle 44: Arab, ranked third in Class 5A, knocked off No. 2 Hartselle at home behind 36 points from Auburn signee Alli Smalley.

For Hartselle, Jessi Smith scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lauren Drake added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Mary Virginia Reeves had nine points and seven rebounds.

Kristen Sparkman sank nine of 10 free throws and scored 11 points in Danville's home win.

Priceville's Keila Hamlin had 11 points to lead her team.
