Black, Hensley carry the torch for Lady Bobcats

Speake High’s girls basketball team won the Class 1A, Area 11 tournament championship with a 65-49 win over Mount Hope in Saturday’s title game.

Kylie Black paced the Lady Bobcats (12-15) with 38 points and 18 rebounds. Malea Hensley contributed 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Tamara Robinson led Mount Hope (12-11) with 16 points, and Anna Roberson pitched in 12.

Both teams advanced to Thursday’s sub-regional round.

Mount Hope will travel to Marion County, while Speake will host Sulligent. Marion County beat Sulligent 51-40 on Saturday for the Area 12 championship.

Class 3A, Area 11

Good Hope 47, Danville 43, OT: Kristen Sparkman paced the Lady Hawks (17-13) with 14 points and 13 rebounds in an overtime loss.

Bethany Evans added 10 points and three steals. Alaina Fitzgerald scored eight points, and Lauren Simmons hauled down 11 rebounds.

Good Hope got 12 points from Jessica Raper and 10 from Brianna Posey.

Danville led 19-17 at halftime, and the two teams were tied at 38 at the end of regulation.

Danville now will travel to either Sumiton Christian or Winfield for a sub-regional game Thursday.

Those two teams play Monday at 6 p.m. at Winfield, and the Lady Hawks will face the winner.

Class 2A, Area 10

Cold Springs girls 55, Addison 46: After splitting two regular-season meetings, Cold Springs slipped past Addison to win the area tournament.

Jessy Willingham paced the Lady Bulldogs (19-8) with 25 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kayla Carden added 11 points.

Haley Wiggins pulled down seven rebounds, and Kayla Woodard had five rebounds and five assists.

Georgia Myrex and Kayla Johnson each had 16 points for Cold Springs, a Final Four participant from a year ago.

Addison will travel to either Mars Hill or Red Bay for a sub-regional game Thursday.
