Speake, Hazlewood win
area championships

Juarez Fitzgerald tossed in 17 points to lead Speake's boys basketball team to a Class 1A, Area 11 championship, beating 63-58 win over St. Bernard.

Javaris Stover added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Bobcats (21-6).

Fitzgerald contributed six assists as his Speake Bobcats trailed by 10 points at one point in the third quarter.

Jacob Moody had 10 points and Chase Atkins added nine for Speake.

Class 1A, Area 15

Hazlewood boys 61, R.A. Hubbard 45: Hazlewood (17-10) was up by double-digits at halftime, 32-22, behind nine Golden Bear scorers, to take the Class 1A, Area 15 championship.

Hazlwood's Ken Nance was the game's high scorer with 16 points, while Kerry Jones, Akeem Koger and Dave McCoy added eight apiece.

For R.A. Hubbard, Devans Orr led with 14 points, followed followed by Darius Grant with nine.

Hazlewood girls 70, R.A. Hubbard 62: A close game at halftime with the Lady Golden Bears up 33-31, ended with defending area champion Hazlewood on top.

Amber Jones led Hazlewood with 29 points, while Jasmine Patton added 12 points, and Naughtia Langham and Josalin Johnson each had eight.

For R.A. Hubbard, Bernisha Harris led with 22 points, while Deszarae Ricks had 11.

Girls soccer

Decatur's Megan Schmidt scored the game's first goal with a 20-yard free kick early in the game and the Lady Red Raiders soccer team was not to be caught defeating Athens 10-0 on Monday night.

Schmidt, a junior midfielder, added two more goals in Decatur's season opener.

The Red Raiders dominated the game with 36 shots while Athens didn't get a shot on goal.

Others scoring for Decatur were Meg Adams with two, and Ellie Cole, Sally Adams, Sarah Beth Henderson and Sunny Conner with one each.

Decatur is to play in Arab at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
