Austin wins Southern Shootout
Black Bears knock off No. 10-ranked Mountain Brook in tourney finals

DAPHNE — Austin Highís boys soccer team won four matches in two days to take the championship of the Southern Shootout.
In Saturday nightís finals, the 17th-ranked Black Bears won 4-3 over Mountain Brook, which is ranked 10th in the stateís Class 6A rankings.
Austin (6-0) opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over McGill on Friday afternoon. The Black Bears then scored a 2-1 victory Friday evening over Briarwood Christian, the No. 4-ranked team in 5A.
On Saturday morning, Austin polished off Sylacauga 2-1 before facing the Spartans for the championship.
Against Mountain Brook in regulation, Garrett Hayes scored a pair of goals, and Lee Thibodaux added one.
With the two teams tied 3-3, the match went into a penalty-kick shootout, which Austin won. Connor Bryan, Jake Mendenhall, Tomoki Matsuo, Pasqual Alonzo and Hart Mendenhall made penalty kicks to lift the Black Bears.
Austinís Matsuo won the tournamentís most valuable player award, while Black Bears goalkeeper Andrew Lowman was named defensive player of the tournament. Bryan landed on the all-tournament squad, too.
Austin is scheduled to play again Tuesday at Albertville before returning home for a Thursday date against No. 2-ranked Grissom at 6:30 p.m.
