Houston holds on to defeat Blazers

Robert McKiver scored 18 points and Dion Dowell hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:23 left as Houston beat UAB 70-64 in Houston on Saturday night.

Jamar Thorpe scored 16 points and Oliver Lafayette added 11 points for Houston (14-11, 8-3 Conference USA), who beat UAB for the first time in five meetings.

Wen Mukubu scored a game-high 24 points for the Blazers (13-13, 5-7). Paul Delaney III scored 13 points and Frank Holmes added 10.

Alabama St. 71, Southern 58: At Baton Rouge, La., Andrew Hayles had 23 points, including five of nine 3-point attempts, as Alabama State beat Southern.

Miguel Morton added 11 points for Alabama State (9-15), which led 37-21 at the half. Richard Lott Jr. had 11 rebounds for the Hornets.

Alcorn St. 86, Alabama A&M 77: Delvin Thompson scored 22 points and helped Alcorn State break a three-game losing streak.

Trent Simpson led Alabama A&M (8-17, 2-11 SWAC) with 22 points and Jonathan Inman scored 10.

Evansville 69, Samford 65: At Birmingham, Jason Holsinger scored 16 points and Matt Webster added 15 to help lead Evansville.

Samford (14-14) was led by Randall Gulina’s 17 points. Joe Ross Merritt and Jerry Smith
both scored 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Chattanooga 75, Jacksonville St. 64: Casey Long scored 28 points and started a late rally to lead Chattanooga.

Courtney Bradley led Jacksonville State (8-20, 6-12 Ohio Valley Conference) with 28 points.

W. Kentucky 75, Troy 74: Jeremy Evans scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds Saturday night as Western Kentucky held off a furious rally by Troy.

Sammy Sharp scored 20 to lead Troy (11-16, 6-10 Sun Belt).
