Calhoun sweeps in softball, baseball doubleheaders

The Calhoun Community College baseball team swept two games at home Saturday, beating Northeast Mississippi 6-5 in nine innings and 11-1.

In the first game, Decatur High graduate Jesse Perrin tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Jacob Lamar went 2-for-4 for Calhoun, and J.J. Hoover got the pitching win.

In the second game, Perrin was 1-for-3 with two RBIs on a third-inning double. Kevin Weidenbacher, Daryl Otwell and Bennie Holcey each went 2-for-3.

Jordan Smith got the pitching win.

Calhoun (7-0) will play a doubleheader at Coahoma on Tuesday.


GADSDEN — The Calhoun softball team opened its season with a pair of victories in the Cardinal Classic.

The Lady Warhawks beat Shelton State 2-0 and Southern Union 11-6.

Against Shelton State, West Limestone graduate Ashley Blankenship scored in the sixth inning on a single by Stevie Griffin, an East Lawrence graduate. Decatur graduate Breanna Lee got the win in relief of Alicia Hall. Calhoun had eight singles, including two by Griffin and one each by Brittany Norton (East Lawrence), Whitney Mooney (Clements), Elizabeth Mann, Courtney Terry (East Lawrence), Lacey Keenum (Athens) and Blankenship.

In the second game, the Lady Warhawks trailed 3-0 before Lee slugged a homer in the second inning to score Blankenship.

Then after trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Calhoun scored seven runs on seven hits to take command.

Griffin began the big inning with a single and a stolen base. Mooney and Keenum singled on a bunt to load the bases. Terry followed with a double to score two. Norton drove in Keenum and Terry with a triple. Blankenship, Lee, Brittany Chafin, and Griffin continued the hitting spree with consecutive singles.

Blankenship, Griffin, Keenum and Lee each went 2-for-3, and Hall got the win on the mound.

Next, Calhoun will travel to Wadley on Tuesday to play Southern Union in a doubleheader.
