Black Bears win
baseball opener

Austin High's baseball team took a 6-4 win over Scottsboro in its season opener Monday in the Huntsville High preseason tournament.

Ben Bullard got the win on the mound for the Black Bears, going four innings, striking out eight, while allowing two hits and no earned runs.

Matt Kilgro earned the save, pitching the final three innings.

Jake McCay and Jud Stephenson each scored twice for Austin. McCay was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Stephenson was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Russ Sandlin went 3-for-3 for the Black Bears with three singles and three RBIs.

Austin will face Buckhorn on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Madison Academy's field as tournament play continues.

Buckhorn 8, Decatur 7: Buckhorn's Chase Marona, a Northwest-Shoals signee, went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run to lead the Bucks in the Huntsville High tournament.

Decatur's Alex Gist was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and William Sartain knocked a two-run homer. John Frost and Graham Spencer each doubled.

Spencer also scored twice for the Red Raiders.

Steven Tumbleson got the start on the mound for Decatur, striking out three in 3-1/3 innings.

Trevor Shook earned the win on the mound for Buckhorn, going four innings, striking out three, while allowing six hits, two earned runs and walking two.

Decatur will play Lee-Huntsville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Huntsville High as the tournament continues.

Athens 8, Clements 1: Athens got a win in its season opener with Colin McMurry on the mound in the East Limestone preseason tournament.

McMurry went six innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit in 21 batters. He also stepped to the plate to belt a two-RBI home run.

Also for the Golden Eagles, Zach Brock blasted a three-run homer and singled, while Brad Reasonover had a solo homer. Tyler Dorning and Keith Chronister each added two hits for the winners.

Athens also got a double from Drew Hill and a hit apiece from Todd Pepper and Kyle Chronister.

Athens will play Ardmore on Tuesday at 4:30 at East Limestone High as the tournament continues.

Priceville 4, Madison County 3, 9 innings: Matt Croft scored the winning run off a sacrifice fly by Dustin Chambers.

Chambers also got the pitching win after working two innings. Croft finished 1-for-1 with a triple and two runs.

Priceville 10, Butler 0: Lance Hughes pitched five innings for the win, allowing two hits and striking out three.

Chambers was 2-for-3 with a double, and Eli Allen was 2-for-3. Croft, Aaron Sawyer and Rand Hutchison each had a single.
