UNA sweeps two in tourney at Wilson Morgan

From staff reports

The North Alabama softball team won twice in two games in the UAH Charger Chillout on Saturday at Wilson Morgan Park.

The Lions held on for a 3-2 victory over Central Missouri before routing Bellarmine 15-5 in five innings.

Against UCM, the Lions took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning but had to hold on after the Jennies hit a two-run home run to make things interesting. Starting pitcher Stephanie Glienke, however, was able to recover and record the final two outs to end the game.

Glienke gave up nine hits, but also recorded nine strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the year.

UNA (13-1) was able to break a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. An RBIdouble by Jessica Liddy scored Kim Lee and Lindsey Greene. The Lions added what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Andrea Palmer scored on a fielding error

Liddy finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Against Bellarmine, Liddy had another perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a single and a grand slam. Her four-run shot was part of an 11-run inning for the Lions, who scored 15 runs off 13 hits.

Greene, Nikki Reed, Sarah Whitlow, Amy Goebel and Emily Beckwith each recorded two hits in the game.

UNA will wrap up play at the Chillout on Sunday, facing Truman State at 9 a.m. and Barry at 11 a.m.

Ala.-Huntsville wrapup

After being stunned by Truman State 6-3 in their first game on Saturday, the 12th-ranked UAH Chargers came back to beat No. 23 Southern Indiana 5-2.

Truman State, which was winless on the season after losing their first two games, hammered UAH pitching for 10 hits. Three UAH pitchers stepped into the circle and none came away unscathed.

The Chargers came out fired up against Southern Indiana, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. UAH added two more runs in the fourth inning and sophomore right-hander Sage Woodham made the lead stand up.

Woodham went the distance, struck out 12 and allowed seven hits. Both of the USI runs were unearned.

Jenny Hess and Caroline Weatherly were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Weatherly had a double and Hess had an RBI. Stephanie Pinto also drove in a pair of runs.

On Sunday, UAH will face Northern Kentucky at 11 a.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
