Troy loses in tournament

With a game-high 21 points, Calvin O’Neil led Middle Tennessee to a 72-64 victory over Troy in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament Wednesday night.

The lead changed hands 20 times and the score was tied nine times, but the Blue Raiders took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Kevin Kanaskie with 6:09 left to play. Middle Tennessee (14-16) advances to play South Alabama in Sunday’s quarterfinals in Lafayette, La.

Southern Miss 76, UAB 68: Javarvis Hill scored a career-high 22 points as Southern Miss beat The University of Alabama-Birmingham, assuring the Golden Eagles at least a .500 mark in conference play for the first time in six seasons.

Wen Mukubu had 26 points and seven rebounds for UAB.
