McMurry strikes out 11 in mound work for Athens

Colin McMurry struck out 11 in six innings pitched and Leon Graves blasted a solo home run in the sixth to help Athens to the 3-1 victory over East Limestone.

Kyle Chronister went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the first inning and Keith Chronister also went 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles (6-0). Athens next plays Saturday at Ardmore.

Boys soccer

Hartselle 2, Gulf Shores 0: Zack Woodruff scored the game's only goals as Hartselle advanced in the prestigious Island Cup soccer tournament in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach on Friday.

In the first half, Brad Galloway assisted on Woodruff's first score.

In the second half, Aslan Davis got the assist on the second, a header by Woodruff.

The tournament, which features 30 teams from across the country, continues Saturday.

Baseball

Decatur 18, Scottsboro 2: Will Sartain crushed a grand slam in the fourth inning as part of a 3-for-5 day to lead the Red Raiders offensive onslaught.

John Frost went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Tyler Spivey and Will Dennis each went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Blaine Ingram picked up the win, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out eight.

Decatur plays at Florence 4 p.m. Friday.

Softball

Speake 7, West Point 3: Kylie Black scattered four hits in eight innings while striking out eight and Malea Hensley had a double and two RBIs for the Lady Bobcats
(1-0) who rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the seventh to tie the game and win in extra innings.

Sarah Bolan scored two runs and Bertha Priebe had a double and two RBI.

West Morgan 2, Bob Jones 0: The Lady Rebels scored two runs in the third and that was all they needed behind pitcher Lauren Seibert. Sebirt shutout the Lady Patriots, striking out six and allowing three hits in four innings.

She also had a triple and Lauryn Kilgo blasted a solo inside the park home run. West Morgan next plays Madison Academy at 9 a.m. in the Hazel Green Invitational.
