West Morgan, Priceville split baseball doubleheader

The baseball teams from Priceville High and West Morgan split a pair of games Monday behind the pitching arms of the Bulldogs’ Will Stevens and Rebels winning pitcher Anthony Atemon.

Priceville won the first game 8-5 before West Morgan earned the split with a matching 8-5 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Stevens (1-0) pitched a full seven innings, striking out three. In the second game, Atemon (2-1) struck out nine in seven complete innings as the Rebels dealt Priceville its first loss of the young season.

“It’s early in the season, but we’re off to a good start,” Priceville coach Shane Hopkins said.

Priceville’s Matt Croft was 5-for-7 for the day, including a home run and a double. Lance Hughes was 2-for-2 in Priceville’s win with a double, while Rand Hutchison, Aaron Sawyer, Kody Ethridge and Heath Parker each contributed a single in the Bulldogs’ win.

For West Morgan, Brent Lea and Seth Wallace each went 2-for-4 in the opening game.

Tyler Jones knocked two doubles in the Rebels’ win, while Atemon and Justin Phillips also doubled. Josh McAbee was 2-for-4.

Priceville (8-1) and West Morgan (4-3) will play another doubleheader Thursday at West Morgan at 2 p.m.


Lawrence County 7, East Lawrence 5: Kaylyn Smith went six innings, striking out five, on the mound for the Lady Red Devils, and Summer Wilkerson finished the job, pitching the seventh.

The Lady Red Devils built a 7-1 lead before East Lawrence mounted a rally.

Sallie Burch was 3-for-4 with a double for Lawrence County (6-1).

Teammate Whitney Hood had an RBI triple, Ragan Fleming was 2-for-3, and Nicole Jackson went 2-for-4.

For East Lawrence, Rachel Norton was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, while Tiffany Terry, Kristen Alexander and Dana Maxwell each had a double.


State rankings update: In the state coaches’ poll released Monday, Austin moved to No. 2 in the Class 6A boys poll. In 5A, four area boys teams are ranked, including Decatur (seventh), Brewer (10th), Athens (11th) and Hartselle (12th).

East Limestone’s boys are No. 14 in the 1A-4A poll.

In the girls rankings, Austin is No. 13 in 6A, while Decatur is third in 5A.

In 1A-4A, East Limestone is No. 6, and West Limestone is No. 13.

Decatur girls 1, East Limestone 0: Jennifer Neill broke a scoreless tie just seven minutes into the second half when she slipped a pass from Megan Schmidt past the Indians’ goalkeeper.

The win was the fourth shutout in seven games for Decatur (3-1-3).

The Lady Raiders will face off against Lee-Huntsville in a Tuesday game at 5 p.m. in Huntsville.

Priceville boys 6, Covenant Christian 0: The Bulldogs scored their initial goal on a cross from Tim Savoy to Joey Barber.

Ryan Woodson, Derrick Smith and Savoy each added a goal before halftime for a 4-0 advantage.

In the second half, Justin Anderson and Jonathan Savoy each scored a goal.

Lorand Dragu played in goal in the first half for Priceville, while Clint Livingston was in goal in the second half.
