Whitten picks up Lady Raiders in relief

Meg Whitten picked up Decatur High's softball team with a stellar relief performance in a 5-2 win over Bob Jones on Thursday.

Whitten entered with two outs in the first inning because of an injury to the starter and pitched the rest of the way. Whitten struck out five and allowed only a single and a double.

At the plate, Decatur scored three times in the first inning, once in the third and once in the fourth.

Kara Couch had two singles and two RBIs for Decatur (7-6), while Lindsey Hawkins added two singles and an RBI. Whitney Fletcher singled twice, and Amanda Tidwell doubled once.

Jennifer Lawrence singled and drove in a run, and Whitten had a single. Abi Lott drove in a run with a walk.

Bob Jones dropped to 7-4 with the loss.

Lawrence County 9, Austin 2: Sallie Beth Burch was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to help pace Lawrence County.

Whitney Hood and Kassie Terry each had a double and two RBIs, and Ragan Fleming was 2-for-3. Summer Wilkerson doubled once, and Carlie Borden and Morgan Smith each had a single.

Kaylyn Smith (5-1) pitched a complete game for the win, working seven innings and allowing five hits.

For Austin, Tara May singled twice, while Ali Barnette, Rebecca Stephenson and Rudi Acklin each had one single.

Danville 4-7, Fairview 1-1: In the first game, Danville's Kristen Thompson pitched a complete game, striking out 16 batters and allowing only a hit and two walks.

Sarah Terry was 2-for-3 with a stolen base for Danville, while Thompson was 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Bethany Evans was 1-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Kelsey Bell was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

In the second game, Britney Atkins got the win after pitching six innings and striking out nine.

Michelle Smith was 3-for-4 with two singles, a home run and two RBIs. Whitney Haggamaker was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Atkins was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Hannah Little was 2-for-2 with two singles.

Lindsey Simmons was 1-for-1 with a triple and an RBI.

Baseball

Priceville 12-15, West Morgan 15-10: West Morgan took the first game with Daniel Korpi going 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBIs.

Josh McAbee was 2-for-5 with a homer, and Anthony Atemon was 2-for-4. Brent Lee was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

For Priceville, EliAllen was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Matt Croft was 3-for-5, and Logan Manthey was 2-for-4 with a double.

Priceville won the second game as Dustin Chambers was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two homers and three RBIs.

Chambers (3-0) also was the winning pitcher.

Croft was 3-for-5 with a double, and Kody Etheridge and JeremyHale each went 3-for-5.

For West Morgan,Atemon was 2-for-4 with a homer.

Chandler Culver and Seth Wallace each went 2-for-4. McAbee was 2-for-3.

Hazlewood 11, Tharptown 4: Rickey Posada paced Hazlewood by going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Nicholas Long was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Tarrent Steele was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Paris Williams was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Corey Jones got the pitching win for the Golden Bears after coming into the game in relief in the third inning.

Boys golf

Decatur 159, Austin 173, Randolph 196: Decatur High's boys golf team won a tri-match at Decatur Country Club on Thursday.

For Decatur, Bill Nabors led with a 35, followed by Andrew Lowry (40), Stuart Morehead (41) and Braxton Rainey (43). For Austin, Madison Terry led the way with a 40. Caleb Ford and Dan Stephenson each shot a 44, and Zack Gourgeot shot a 54.
