Calhoun sweeps baseball, softball doubleheaders

Calhoun Community College's baseball team swept two games from Hibbing of Minnesota 12-1 and 12-2 on Thursday.

In the first game, Joey Mohler got the pitching win after working five innings and striking out seven.

Kevin Weidenbacher and Jesse Perrin each went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs for Calhoun (17-1). Daryl Otwell was 1-for-3 with three RBIs,a nd Dan Ingram was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

In the second game, Drew Owens pitched four innings for the win and struck out six. Jason Dorcey worked two innings in relief and struck out five.

Weidenbacher was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Jarrod Harrison was 2-for-3. Ingram was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Bailey Hardwick was 2-for-2.


The Calhoun softball team won twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to sweep a doubleheader from Jefferson State 2-1 and 4-3 on Thursday.

In the first game, Calhoun's Alicia Hall allowed two hits and a run to Jeff State in the third but shut down her foe after that.

In the seventh inning, Stevie Griffin of East Lawrence High reached first base on a walk and advanced on Jenea Stephenson's bunt. Kimberly Haney scored Griffin on an infield hit.

In the eighth inning tiebreaker, Courtney Terry singled. Breanna Lee sacrificed her to second, and Brittany Norton hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Griffin to third.

Pinch-hitter Kala Weatherly got the game-winning hit to score Griffin.

Hall pitched seven innings and struck out four. Lee relieved Hall in the top of the eight and shut down the Pioneers with three straight strikeouts. Terry was 2-for-4 with a single and a double, while Lee, Weatherly, Griffin, Haney, and Stephenson each had a single.

In the second game, both teams scored in the first inning and were tied 1-1 after seven innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, Jeff State score two runs on two hits to take a 3-1 lead. The Lady Warhawks managed three runs in the bottom of the inning to win it.

Weatherly doubled to score Lindsey Lowrey and Norton to tie the game. Later, Haney had a single to load the bases. Chaffin, running for Weatherly, scoring the winning run on a passed ball.

Lee went the distance for the Lady Warhawks, striking out five and scattering six hits in eight innings.

For Calhoun, Lacey Keenum had a double and a single. Lee had a trple, and Brittany Norton and Stevie Griffin each had two singles. Courtney Terry added a single.
