Gist's bat leads Decatur

Alex Gist gave Decatur High a lift at the plate and on the mound in a 5-3 home win over Florence on Friday.

Gist went 3-for-3 and slugged a two-run homer in the first inning. He also pitched the final two innings to close out the victory.

Florence (5-6) led 2-0 after scoring twice in the top of the first, but Decatur responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Gist and William Sartain each hit two-run homers to put the Red Raiders (4-4) out front.

Florence closed the gap to 4-3 with a run in the fourth inning, but Decatur got an insurance run in the sixth.

For the Red Raiders, Joe Lothspeich worked five innings for the win. He allowed eight hits and struck out two. Gist struck out two in his two innings of work.

At the plate, Graham Spencer added a double for Decatur, while John Frost had a single.

Austin 8-1, Hazel Green 5-7: The Black Bears split a doubleheader with visiting Hazel Green, taking the first game 8-5 before losing the second 7-1.

In the opener, Hazel Green led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third before Austin scored twice in that inning, four times in the fourth and once each in the fifth and sixth.

Trey Richard went 2-for-4 for Austin with five RBIs. Alex McCay was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, and Ty Chancelor was 1-for-3 with a solo home run.

Gabe Porter got the win in relief with 4 1/3 innings of work. He allowed no runs and only four hits.

For Hazel Green, Grant Edwards was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

In the second game, Hazel Green scored twice in the first inning and never trailed. Austin's lone run came in the fourth inning.

Matt Frazier had two singles for Austin (3-6).

Tucker Willard hit a two-run homer for Hazel Green, and Colby Lipham added a solo shot.

Lawrence County 6, Winston County 1: Will Inman went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the Red Devils' win.

Wes Holley added a two-run homer, his fourth of the year. Radney Wallace was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Britt White was 1-for-2 with a double, and Matthew Pugh was 1-for-3.

Pugh pitched four innings to get the win for Lawrence County (9-2). He struck out seven. Coty Way worked the final three innings for the save.

Lawrence County will face Danville at home Monday in a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m.

Athens 13, Clements 3: The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten at 9-0 by defeating Clements. Athens led 4-3 after six innings before breaking it open with nine runs in the seventh.

Todd Pepper had two singles and a double for Athens. Colin McMurry added a double and two singles, and Kyle Chronister, Keith Chronister and Drew Hill each had two singles.

McMurry got the pitching win after working four innings and striking out seven.

Waterloo 6, Decatur Heritage 3: Bo Godwin had a triple as the Eagles pounded out seven hits for the winner.

Drew Atchley had a double, and five others contributed one single each: Luke Adams, Chase Wright, Zack Woodruff, Chris Oliver and David Stephenson.

Athens Bible 5, Elkmont 3: Joseph Baker struck out 13 batters and pitched all seven innings in Athens Bible's win.

At the plate, Baker had a double and a single, and Jeremy Couey added a single.

For Elkmont, Chance Newby pitched a complete game and struck out eight.

Softball

West Morgan 7, Danville 1: Lauren Seibert got the pitching win after striking out seven while working six innings.

At the plate, Mandy Robinson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Seibert was 2-for-3. Mikaila Etheredge had a single, and Whitlee Totter had a sacrifice bunt with an RBI.

East Limestone 5, West Morgan 0: East Limestone scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second to take the win.
