West Morgan girls record soccer program's 1st win
Austin girls, boys notch shutouts against Arab

From Staff Reports

West Morgan's Amanda Lindsey collected a hat trick in the first half, scoring three goals as the Lady Rebels beat Butler 4-0 on Friday for the first win in the program's three-year history.

"They've worked hard and earned this win," West Morgan head coach Brandon Rice said Friday. "It feels good to finally get a win."

West Morgan (1-2-2) also got a goal from Casey Bishop. Breken Terry and Courtney Terry were credited with assists.

Rachel Gentry earned the shutout in goal.

West Morgan's next contest is against Hazel Green in Huntsville's Goldsmith Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Austin 2, Arab 0: Rebecca Roberts scored in the first half and Leah Kelly in the second for the Lady Black Bears' fifth win of the season Friday.

Stephanie White and Jen Zellner combined in goal to get the shutout.

Austin's will host Florence at 7 p.m. Monday at the Jack Allen Soccer Complex in Southwest Decatur.

Grissom 1, Decatur 0: The Lady Red Raiders (4-2-3) allowed only one goal, which came right before halftime, but that was enough to lift rival Grissom (8-3-1).

The match was the opening game of the Huntsville Hospital Classic in Madison.

The Lady Tigers scored when all-state forward Katie Sturges made a run to the near post and headed home a corner kick with 1:17 to go in the first half.

Grissom, the defending Class 6A state champions, controlled the midfield but Decatur's defense disrupted the Lady Tigers' attacks, forcing Grissom to shoot from long range where Decatur goal-minder Shannon Laughlin was able to easily save the shots.

Decatur had several chances to tie the game late when sisters Sally and Meg Adams freed themselves with the ball in the penalty area. The Grissom defense held solid, and Grissom goal-keeper Cassie Woodford saved the few shots Decatur was able to attempt.

Decatur coach Mike Pline said he was pleased with the overall effort his girls had given, adding, "This was the best game Decatur had ever played against Grissom and their best game of the 2007 season."

The 5A No. 3 Lady Raiders will meet 6A No. 1 Huntsville at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bob Jones Field No. 2. Then at 3 p.m., Decatur will play 6A No. 9 Bob Jones at the Madison City Schools Stadium. Tickets are $5 a day. Children under 12 are admitted free.

Brewer 2, Decatur 2: Jack Anschek had a goal and an assist as the 10th-ranked Patriots tied the seventh-ranked Red Raiders.

Decatur got a goal and an assist from Raul Alanis.

The Red Raiders scored first when Alanis found the back of the net
from 10 yards out 27 minutes into the game.

Brewer countered two minutes later with Wanschek scoring from 18 yards out. Grant Pierce got the assist.

Brewer opened the second half by scoring two minutes in when Jeremy Talley scored from 8 yards out off an assist from Wanschek.

Decatur kept fighting back, and with seven minutes to play, Tom Gray scored from 8 yards out off an assist from Alanis.

Both teams play again Tuesday when Decatur hosts No. 15 Arab and Brewer hosts No. 12 Hartselle.
