The two traditional sports of the area highlight this year’s Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame induction class — basketball and football.

The class of seven inductees includes three with close basketball ties (Rickie Stukes and brothers Alfred and Donald Poole) and three former football standouts (Roger Ferrell and brothers Preston and Johnny Newman).

Only former baseball star Larry Keenum keeps it from being a sweep.

The Hall of Fame began honoring former county athletic standouts with its first class in 1989, and proceeds from the annual banquet benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur.

This year’s event will be June 9 at the Decatur Holiday Inn.

A reception will be at 6 p.m. and the banquet at 7.

Hall of Fame board member Doug Turney is in charge of ticket sales, and people wishing to attend the banquet can call him at 773-2466 during 5-9
p.m.

Tickets are $30 each.

A brief look at this year’s inductees, in alphabetical order:

Roger Ferrell: He played football, basketball and baseball at Decatur High and then advanced to North Alabama, where he played football.
