Decatur softball team claims area contest

On a roll, the Decatur High Lady Red Raiders tested their skills in Class 5A, Area 16 play for the first time Tuesday night. So far, so good. Decatur
downed Muscle Shoals 6-5 with Mollie Russell on the mound for the extra-inning win.

Russell struck out 10 batters in 11 innings and also chipped in a single at the plate.

Down 4-0 after two innings, Decatur (14-6) mounted a comeback, scoring two runs in the third, another in the fourth, and adding single runs in the sixth and 10th, before a base hit by Amanda Tidwell in the 11th inning scored Lindsey Hawkins to put the Lady Red Raiders ahead 6-5.

Russell took the mound and struck out two batters in the bottom of the 11th to seal the victory.

Hawkins had three singles for the winners, while Whitney Fletcher, Jennifer Lawrence, Tidwell and Scarlett Wright each had two singles.

East Limestone 7, Madison Academy 6: East Limestone took the early lead in the top of the first when Kayla Sneed blasted a two-run homer, and the Lady Indians were up 6-0 before Madison Academy posted its first runs.

Sneed led East Limestone at the plate with a home run, a single and two RBIs. Bess Rhodes went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and four RBIs for the Lady Indians.

Morgan Franks pitched five innings for the winners, striking out five while giving up five hits and walking two. Sneed got the save, pitching the final two innings.

Hartselle 12, Cullman 4: Sara Lang blasted a three-run home run in the win for Hartselle. Kayla Orr also had a quite a day at the plate for the Lady Tigers, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and four runs scored, highlighted by a two-run homer.

Mary Curtis pitched the win for Hartselle (8-3), striking out six batters in seven innings on the mound.

West Morgan 4, Athens 0: Lauren Seibert got her 500th career strikeout on the mound for the Lady Rebels in the win. Seibert totaled 10 strikeouts in pitching the complete seven-inning contest.

Seibert also blasted a home run for West Morgan (6-5), while teammates Mikaila Etheredge and Rachel Harbin were both 2-for-3 at the plate.

West Limestone 3, West Morgan 2: Lauryn Kilgo doubled, while Etheredge and Potter each had an RBI as West Morgan fell to the Lady Wildcats.

Speake 3, Hatton 2: Speake's Kylie Black struck out eight in seven innings, allowing three hits for the win.

Revia Brown had a triple and a single with two RBIs in the win for the Lady Bobcats. Paige Atkins added two singles and an RBI for Speake (8-2).


Hazel Green 3-6, Austin 2-4: The Black Bears dropped two to the Trojans despite Trey Richardson going 6-for-7 at the plate for Austin in the doubleheader. Also for Austin, Jake McCay went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while teammate Ty Chancelor was 3-for-6, including a two-run triple.

Austin's Bobby Foster went 2-for-4 in the second game with a double and a single.

Colbert County 8, Athens 4: For the Golden Eagles, it marked the end of an undefeated streak to start the season, falling in the Lauderdale County tournament.

For Athens (12-1) at the plate, Drew Hill knocked a three-RBI double in the first inning and the Golden Eagles were up 4-0 after the first inning.

After that the Golden Eagles at-bats weren't as productive.

"We hit, but everything was right at them," Athens coach Thad Prater said.

"It was just one of those days."

Athens Tyler Dorning tripled in the contest, while teammates Kyle Chronister and Brad Reasonover each had a double.

Hill got the start on the mound for Athens, striking out two and giving up four runs before being relieved by Jake Nelson in the third inning. Thomas Glenn was 2-for-3 with a triple and double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

West Morgan 8, Danville 4: Seth Wallace and Cory Asher each knocked solo homers to spark West Morgan (8-4) at the plate. Also for the Rebels, Anthony Atemon had two singles, while Brent Lea drove in three runs for West Morgan.

Jacob Crowell got the win for West Morgan on the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out six.

Roger Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate for Danville.

Lawrence County 13-13, Danville 3-4: In a sweep of visiting Danville, the Red Devils took the first game behind a 14-hit attack, headed by Will Inman, who was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Matthew Pugh went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Britt White was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Wes Holley was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Coty Way socked a three-run homer for the winning Red Devils.

Pugh got the win on the mound, going four innings, striking out one and scattering three hits.

Way got the pitching win in the second game, going 2 2/3 innings, striking out three, giving up six hits and allowing no earned runs. Holley picked up the save in the final three innings striking out seven, allowing no hits and no runs.

Lawrence County's Logan Terry was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the second contest.


Austin boys 2, Huntsville 1: Tomo Matsuo scored twice for Austin (10-1-1), on a goal and a penalty kick, as the third-ranked Class 6A Black Bears took the win.

Athens Bible boys 1, West Morgan 0: With 15 seconds left in the first half, Oscar Nunoz scored on a free kick for the game's lone goal.

Athens Bible improved to 5-1 on the season.

West Morgan's goalkeeper Mike Phillips recorded 16 save in the contest. The Rebels (1-3) play at Saint Bernard in Cullman at 7 p.m. Thursday.

West Morgan girls 0, Athens Bible 0: Behind Rachel Gentry's seven save in goal, the Lady Rebels (1-4-3) notched their third tie of the season.

Athens Bible is 1-3-1 on the season.

Hartselle girls 128, Brewer 177: Hartselle's Taylor Kirby shot a 38, for the day's best girls' score at Chelsey Oaks. Teammate Patricia Long followed with a 41, while Kaylon King shot 49. Mary Roberts shot a 60 for the Lady Tigers to round out the winners' top four scorers.

Austin boys 326, Athens 356: At Decatur Country Club, Austin sophomore Zach Gourgeot shot a 79 to lead the Black Bears winning effort. Dan Stephenson was next best for Austin with a 80, while Madison Terry shot an 81. Trevor Johnson shot an 86 for the Black Bears, while Caleb Ford finished with a 91.

Austin girls 142, Athens 185: The Austin Lady Black Bears remained undefeated on the golf course, headed by sophomore Sloan Davis' nine-hole 43 at the Decatur Country Club. Austin freshman Kristen Davis followed with a 44, while Francie Caradine shot a 55. Also for Austin, Erin Reid shot a 59.
