Hood, Lady Red Devils quiet Speake

Whitney Hood knocked in two runs in the first inning, and the Lawrence County Lady Red Devils edged Speake 3-2 in high school softball action Wednesday afternoon in Moulton.
Hood had a single and double on the day.
Lawrence County (15-6) also got two singles each from Nicole Jackson and Kassie Terry. Morgan Smith and Summer Wilkerson each singled for the winners.
Pitcher Ashley Pitt gave up two hits and no runs in three innings of work to earn the victory. She is 2-1 on the year.
McKenzie Black doubled and Malea Hensley singled for Speake.
The Lady Red Devils scored three runs in the decisive first inning.
Lawrence County plays East Lawrence in the first round of the Lawrence County tournament at Mount Hope on Thursday. First pitch is 5:30 p.m.
Mountain Brook 10, Decatur 9: Mountain Brook scored the winning run in the seventh inning to defeat the Red Raiders in the Mountain Brook Invitational.
Alex Gist went 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored for Decatur. Tyler Spivey was 3-for-4 with three singles and two RBIs. John Frost had a single and a double and three RBIs. William Sartain went 1-for-4 with a single for the Red Raiders. Decatur plays at Hazel Green on Monday.
Decatur 3, Winfield 2: Frost was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a single and a double. Clint Dunlap went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Will Dennis and Graham Spencer each had singles for the Red Raiders (8-11).
Joe Lothspeich started and allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings while striking out four. Gist tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Austin 6, Bryant 4: Ben Bullard pitched a complete game and allowed one earned run while striking out six to pick up the win at the Buccaneer Classic in Hoover.
Russ Sandlin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a two run homer in the sixth. Ty Chancelor was 2-for-3 with a double. Jake McCay had a two-run homer in four trips to the plate for the Black Bears who improved to 9-11 on the season. Austin plays at 10 a.m. Thursday in the championship round.
Austin 10, Southside Gadsden 9: The Black Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind against Southside-Gadsden,
Sandlin had the game-winning double as part of a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs and two doubles.
McCay went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Chancelor chipped in going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
