East Lawrence rallies past Priceville with 2 runs in 6th inning
From Staff Reports
PRICEVILLE — Ethan Hopkins' double in the sixth inning started a rally that eventually pushed the East Lawrence High baseball team to a 3-2 win over Priceville.
Down 2-1 to begin the inning, Tyler Boyd walked following Hopkins' hit. Then both moved up a base on a passed ball.
Carson Blaylock grounded out to second base to score Hopkins and move Boyd to third.
Boyd then scored on another passed ball, giving East Lawrence (10-8) the game-winning run.
Russ Stephenson led East Lawrence with two singles.
Hunter Rivers picked up the win, tossing seven innings in which he gave up two runs on two hits and struck out six.
"Hunter pitched real well," East Lawrence coach Rob Cosby said. "He threw strikes and stayed ahead of the hitters."
Dustin Chambers led Priceville (19-4) at the plate with two singles and a pair of RBIs.
The victory gave East Lawrence an early lead in the Class 4A, Area 15 race, which also includes Fairview and Lawrence County.
"We were kind of concerned coming in," Cosby said. "Their record, 19-3, that's kind of intimidating. "But today everybody was 0-0, and that's what we told our kids. Even when we were behind, we told them to keep hitting and we would scratch out a run.
"But we've got to go play again."
East Lawrence and Priceville are set to play Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at East Lawrence.
