Decatur wins in softball,
Austin takes baseball victory

In Class 5A, Area 16 softball action, Decatur beat Russellville 7-2 as the Lady Red Raiders' Whitney Fletcher delivered a two-run homer and a triple.

Lindsey Hawkins had a double and a single for the Lady Red Raiders, and Jelisa Thompson had two singles. Jennifer Lawrence and Abi Lott each had a single.

Mollie Russell was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing two hits. Russell also contributed two singles.

Decatur (22-7) will travel to play in the 60-team Worth tournament in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Friday and Saturday.

Grissom 2, Austin 1, 10 innings: The Lady Black Bears battled through extra innings before falling to the Lady Tigers.

After Grissom posted a run in the top of the fifth, Austin answered in the bottom of the inning tying the score at 1. Grissom scored an unearned run to win it in the 10th.

Haley Barnette had two singles and scored the Lady Black Bears' lone run. Melissa Thompson and Sarah Corn each contributed a single for Austin.

Austin left runners on base in each of the final eight innings.

"We had our chances," Austin coach Butch Wright said. "We had runners on second and third many times and didn't score them. But the girls played hard. They're not giving up — they didn't quit."

Senior Elizabeth Gillespie pitched eight innings for the Lady Black Bears, allowing one run before Kristen Hill relieved in the ninth.

Austin (5-20) will play in the Albertville Invitational on Friday and Saturday before hosting rival Decatur on Monday.

Austin will begin pool play in Albertville by facing J.B. Pennington at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

West Morgan 4, West Limestone 3, 11 innings: Hayden Hamby ended the extra-inning affair in the 11th inning, scoring the game-winning run for the Lady Rebels on a passed ball.

Hamby's two singles and Lauren Seibert's pair of singles were the only four hit for West Morgan (19-9) in the contest.

Seibert also contributed an RBI and got the win on the mound, striking out 16 batters as she worked all 11 innings.

Seventh-grader Hannah Bildine struck out six batters on the mound for West Limestone.

Speake 16, Winston County 1: Revia Brown led the charge as Speake (15-8) exploded at the plate. Brown blasted a two-run homer to go along with a triple and a single.

Whitney Sparks had a double and a single for Speake, while teammate Bridget Fulks went 3-for-4 with three singles.

Speake's Sarah Bolan struck out seven batters, allowing one hit and pitching the complete game for the win.


Austin 7, East Lawrence 4: The Black Bears won their third straight game on the strength of good hitting and the work of Scott Peyton and Corey Jackson on the mound.

Peyton got the win, allowing four hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Jackson recorded the save, allowing no hits as he finished the game.

Laken Laughmiller hit a solo home run in the second inning that gave Austin (12-13) a lead and the Black Bears never trailed again.

Austin's Ty Chancelor scored twice, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Jake McCay went 2-for-3 for Austin, while Bobby Foster and Matthew Frazier each had a double for the Black Bears.

Russ Stephenson smacked a solo homer for East Lawrence and finished with two RBIs, while teammate Josh Aldridge had a double for the Eagles.

Austin will play Owensboro Catholic of Kentucky on Friday at 4 p.m. at Decatur High. Decatur will play Owensboro Catholic following the conclusion of the first game.

West Morgan 12, Athens 2: A strong day at the plate helped the Rebels to the win. Tyler Jones led West Morgan by going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a single, a double and two RBIs.

Jones also picked up the pitching win, striking out two and allowing four hits in six innings.

Josh McAbee was 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two RBIs for West Morgan, while Seth Wallace finished with a double and three RBIs.

For Athens, Zack Brock knocked a solo home run, while Todd Pepper, Tyler Dorning and Keith Chronister each recorded a single.

West Morgan (18-6) will host Falkville on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Lawrence County 10-5, Fairview 0-1: In 4A, Area 15 play, Wes Holley paced the Red Devils in the first game by going 2-for-3 with a double, his seventh homer of the season, three runs and three RBIs.

Matthew Pugh went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Will Inman had a double, while Josh Gaines contributed a single and an RBI. Radney Wallace, Logan Terry, and Britt White each had a single.

Pugh got the win, pitching a complete-game shutout. He scattered five hits and struck out five.

In the second game, Inman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Logan Terry was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Holley was 2-for-4 with double and one RBI.

Gaines had a single and an RBI, while Pugh added a double. Coty Way, Scott Steele and Britt White each added a single.

Holley pitched seven complete innings. He struck out 13, while allowing three hits and one run. Lawrence County (15-5) will play Friday at 4:30 at Wilson.


Lawrence County Red 161, Muscle Shoals Red 167: Elijah Frost shot a 39 at Deer Run Golf Course in Moulton, leading Lawrence County Red to the win. Teammate Kyle West was next best, tying Muscle Shoals Red's Chad Peebles with a 40.

Lawrence County's Peyton Harris and Brandon Dutton, along with Muscle Shoals Red's Eric Broadfoot, shot 41.

Muscle Shoals Black finished at 190, followed by Lawrence County White at 213. Clay Letson's 49 was the leading score for Lawrence County White.

Colbert County 208, R.A. Hubbard 223: At Valley Landing in Courtland, Ramsee Miller's third-place individual finish led the Chiefs. Miller shot a 48, followed by Fred Davenport's 53.

Also for R.A. Hubbard, Dontay Robinson shot a 58, while Devans Orr shot 64. For Colbert County, Will Counts' 46 topped the leaderboard.

R.A. Hubbard and West Morgan will play at Valley Landing on Tuesday.
