Hartselle wins twice in opening games at own Tiger Classic

Chandler Orr slugged a two-run homer to help Hartselle High's softball team to a 4-1 win over Lawrence County in the Tiger Classic on Friday.

Orr also had a single in the contest, while teammate Kristy Pevahouse added two doubles and a single.

Breanna Segars got the win on the mound, striking out five in five innings.

For Lawrence County, Sallie Beth Burch had a triple and an RBI.

Summer Wilkerson, Nicole Jackson, Morgan Smith and Shae Lane each had a single for the Lady Red Devils.

Hartselle 10, Walker 2: Audrey McClanahan put up a top performance for the Lady Tigers both on the mound and at the plate.

McClanahan was 3-for-3 at the plate, including a triple, a double and five RBIs. She also pitched five innings, allowing five hits in earning the win.

Also for Hartselle (20-5), Pevahouse and Anna Hall each went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and an RBI.

Lawrence County 5, Hazel Green 1: Whitney Hood had a double and knocked in three runs for the Lady Red Devils. Lane, Ashley Pitt and Kassie Terry each had a single for Lawrence County.

Kaylyn Smith tossed a one-hitter, striking out three and walking two in five innings of work.

Hartselle tournament play will continue with Lawrence County playing Walker Saturday at 10 a.m.

Speake 9, Hanceville 5: Malea Hensley paced Speake (16-10) with a solo home run and a double.

Bridgette Fulks and Chyna Colewell each had two singles for the Lady Bobcats.

Winning pitcher Sarah Bolan worked five innings and struck out four.

Speake will face Dora on Saturday in the Addison tournament.

Baseball

Wilson 5, Lawrence County 1: Wilson scored four runs with four singles in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lawrence County's Cole Whalen pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and three runs.

Wilson limited the Red Devils to five hits. Will Inman was 2-for-3, and Coty Way, Logan Terry and Matthew Pugh each added a single.

Lawrence County will face Priceville at home Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Owensboro Catholic (Ky.) 5, Decatur 2: The Red Raiders hosted Owensboro Catholic, the eighth-ranked team from Kentucky, featuring three players who have signed with the University of Louisville.

Alex Gist and William Sartain each had a double for the Red Raiders, and John Frost added a single.

Tyler Spivey and J.T. Boyd each drove in a run for Decatur (8-13).

Priceville 12-5, Brewer 2-4: Matt Croft and Will Steven each went 3-for-4 in the first game of the doubleheader. Aaron Sawyer and Lance Hughes were both 2-for-4.

Gene Blankenship got the win, pitching six innings and striking out two.

Brewer tied the second game 4-4 in the sixth inning, before Eli Allen scored the winning run driven in on a single by Croft in the seventh.

Dustin Chambers contributed to the win with a solo home run, his eleventh of the year. Will Stevens got the pitching win in the second game, pitching two innings of relief.

Priceville (21-5) will play Westminster on Saturday.

Soccer

West Morgan boys 2, Sheffield 0: Jeremy Williams scored for the Rebels in the first minute of play on a goal assisted by Jorge Torreblanca. West Morgan tacked on another when Williams assisted Javier Marcial's goal in the 46th minute.

Mike Phillips was the goalkeeper for the Rebels' Class 1A-4A, Area 5 win.

West Morgan (4-5) will host Covenant Christian in section play Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Tennis

Grissom girls 5, Austin 4: The Lady Black Bears took three singles wins but lost the match when it managed only one victory in doubles.

Austin's Meleana McCutcheon scored a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Jessica Change.

Also, Jena Ward beat Kately Moran 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Rachel King beat Olivia Shanteau 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.

In doubles, Austin's only win came from Ward and Katrina Wujtewicz at No. 2.

Florence girls 8, Austin 1: The Lady Black Bears fell to 1-6 as they got their lone win at No. 1 singles.

McCutcheon beat Hannah Creamor 6-2, 6-4.
