Decatur makes Worth semifinals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Playing in the 30-team Worth Tournament, Decatur Highís softball team made it all the way to the semifinals. The Lady Red Raiders played seven games, winning five, tying once and losing once.

Decatur 3, Heritage 1: Mollie Russell and Meg Whitten combined for a two-hitter against Heritage of Maryville, Tenn.

Whitney Fletcher paced Decatur at the plate with a triple and a double.

Jennifer Lawrence and Mollie Russell each had a single, and Abi Lott doubled.

Decatur 2, Huntington (Ind.) 2: After one extra inning, the two teams found themselves tied, but tournament rules didnít allow them to continue.

Russell pitched for Decatur, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Fletcher slugged a homer.

Decatur 4, Blackman 3: Lindsey Hawkins doubled and drove in two runs against the team from Murfreesboro. Amanda Tidwell singled and had two RBIs.

Lawrence tripled and singled. Whitten got the pitching win.

Decatur 4, Davidson Academy 3: In the start of single-elimination play, Decatur advanced as Fletcher hit her second homer of the tournament.

Hawkins doubled twice, and Lott had two singles. Whitten and Scarlett Wright each had one single.

Russell got the pitching win after striking out four.

Decatur 11, Mason (Ohio) 2: Whitten allowed only four hits and got the pitching win.

Lawrence singled twice and doubled. Hawkins had a double and a single.

Tidwell and Whitten each had one single, and Jelisa Thompson singled twice.

Decatur 1, Siegel 0: Playing another Murfreesboro team, Russell struck out six batters and allowed only one hit to get the win.

Lawrence singled twice, and Hawkins had a double. Fletcher, Whitten and Wright each had one single.

Beech 2, Decatur 1: A Beech run in the last inning doomed Decatur in its semifinal matchup with a team from Hendersonville, Tenn.

Fletcher doubled, and Hawkins, Whitten and Russell each had a single.

Russell pitched and struck out four.

Ranked second in 5A, Decatur (27-8) will play at Austin on Monday at 6 p.m.

With three more wins,Decatur will double last seasonís win total.
