Heritage brings out big
bats against Hazlewood

Chase Wright singled, homered and drove in five runs to lift Decatur Heritage to a 16-1 home win over Hazlewood in Class 1A, Area 15 baseball.

Drew Atchley singled three times and drove in two runs for the Eagles. Zach Woodruff and Sam Hurt each singled twice.

Luke Adams and Chris Oliver combined for the pitching win. They combined to allow five hits and strike out eight batters.

For Hazlewood, Josh Purser, Corey Jones, Ricky Posado, Tarrent Steele and Ken Nance each had a single.

The same two teams play Tuesday at Hazlewood. This was both teams' first area game.

Russellville 9, Decatur 8: John Frost had two singles and two RBIs, while Alex Gist went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for the Red Raiders in their opening 5A, Area 16 game of the year.

Blaine Ingram started and struck out four.

Decatur (8-15) will host Russellville in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Florence 7, Austin 3: The Black Bears led 3-2 before Florence scored five times in the top of the seventh inning.

Austin scored all of its runs in the bottom of the third inning when Jake McCay's three-run double brought home Trey Richard, Zack Thomas and Bobby Foster. Richard went 1-for-3, and Matthew Frazier was 1-for-3 with a double.

Foster pitched six innings for Austin and allowed two runs.

Austin (12-14) will play a doubleheader at Florence on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Muscle Shoals 6, Athens 5: Athens gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to drop its first 5A, Area 16 game of the season.

Tyler Dorning went 1-for-3 with a single. Drew Hill was 1-for-3 with an RBI single, and Zack Brock and Keith Chronister also had RBI singles for the Golden Eagles (18-7).

Hatton 7, Tanner 5: Winning pitcher Will Nichols looked sharp for Hatton striking out out seven batters in seven innings.

Tevin Terrell went 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI while Matthew Dudley went 2-for-3 with a double and a single.

Nathan Berryman went 2-for-3 with two singles for the Hornets (18-10, 3-0 in 2A, Area 15).

Keith Shoulders went 1-for-4 with an RBI double and Cliff Bunch was 2-for-3 with a double for the Rattlers.

East Lawrence 11, Fairview 4: Jared Grimes smacked two singles and a double as part of a 3-for-4 day.

Jonathan Allen and Carson Blalock each went 3-for-4 with two singles a double and an RBI, and Hunter Rivers went 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run for East Lawrence (12-11, 3-0 in 4A, Area 15).

Rivers also pitched, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six.

West Morgan 7, Falkville 0: Anthony Ateman was electric, striking out 12 in seven innings to lead West Morgan (19-6).

Josh McAbee went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and an RBI. Seth Wallace went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI while Michael Clem each went 2-for-3 for the Rebels.

LawrenceCounty 13, Priceville 3: Wes Holley pitched all six innings to get the win, striking out 11 and allowing one hit in a 4A, Area 15 game.

Matthew Pugh led off with a home run, and that started a seven-run first inning for Lawrence County (16-6, 3-0).

Pugh was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Coty Way was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Josh Gaines and Holley each had a double and one RBI. Will Inman and Logan Terry had a single and two RBIs. Radney Wallace added a single.

Lawrence County will play at Priceville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.


Decatur boys 3, Arab 1: Raul Alanis scored two goals. Phoenix Iverson added a goal and Tom Gray dished out two assists for the Red Raiders (7-2-2). Mason Hastie also added an assist.

State rankings: In the rankings released Monday, Austin (13-4-1)landed at No. 2 in the 6A boys list, receiving one first-place vote.

Decatur's boys are fifth in 5A, while the LadyRed Raiders are third in the girls rankings.

Both of Brewer's teams are in the top 10 in 5A, with the boys landing at No. 7 and the girls at No. 9. East Limestone's girls are listed as sixth in the 1A-4A rankings.


West Morgan 7, Tanner 2: Lauryn Kilgo singled twice and drove in two runs for the Lady Rebels.

Sara Hulvey added a single and two RBIs, while Lauren Seibert singled twice. Ashley Thorn accounted for an RBI.

Seibert got the pitching win after striking out 15 in seven innings and giving up seven hits.

Lawrence County 4, Priceville 2: Kaylyn Smith allowed only three hits in seven innings, while striking out four for Lawrence County (23-8).

Summer Wilkerson, Nicole Jackson and Whitney Hood each had singles with Hood picking up an RBI.

Danielle Richard and Meagan Bond had singles for Priceville.
