in 10th inning

Hatton overcomes West Morgan; Decatur falls to Muscle Shoals

In a heated Class 6A, Area 16 contest, Austin senior Bobby Foster pitched all 10 innings in a 3-2 home win over Sparkman.

Foster allowed no earned runs, struck out four and allowed only four hits.

"That might be one of the biggest wins he's ever had," Austin coach Jake Miles said. "It's one of the guttiest performances I've ever seen by a young man."

Pinch-hitter Gabe Porter clinched the win at the plate, ripping a game-winning RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the 10th that scored pinch-runner Carson Minton, who substituted for Drew Sanders.

Sanders reached base on a single. Also at the plate, Foster hit a double in the contest, while Ty Chancelor contributed a single.

Austin (17-16, 2-3 in area) will play a doubleheader at Sparkman on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

An Austin win paired with a Bob Jones loss at Florence on Tuesday will give the Black Bears the area title.

Hatton 9, West Morgan 3: Will Nichols gave the Hornets a boost on the mound and at the plate as they remained undefeated in Class 2A, Area 15 baseball.

Nichols went 3-for-5, blasting three home runs. He also pitched a complete game, striking out four and allowing four hits.

Also for Hatton, Nathan Berryman was 2-for-4, including a double and a single. Chris Hutto was also 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Zeke Nichols had a double.

For West Morgan, Michael Clem ripped a triple, while Anthony Atemon and Brent Lee each had a double.

Atemon pitched and struck out four batters in five innings.

Hatton and West Morgan will play a doubleheader Tuesday at West Morgan at 4:30 p.m.

Hatton (21-12, 5-0 in the area) is one win away from the area title, while a West Morgan sweep Tuesday would give the Rebels the area crown.

Muscle Shoals 8, Decatur 3: Alex Gist paced the Red Raiders in a loss by going 2-for-4 with a single and a triple.

John Frost, Will Dennis and Pete Brown each had a single.

Decatur (10-18) will play the Trojans again Tuesday in a doubleheader at Muscle Shoals at 4:30 p.m.

Athens Bible 23, Hazlewood 3: Jesse Gibson struck out 13 batters in five innings for the win, allowing one hit.

Jordan Pugh knocked a solo home run and a pair of singles for Athens Bible, while Jonathan Windland had a double and a single.

The Trojans' Will Chumbley, Connor Brown and Jordan Brewer each hit two singles apiece.

Hazlewood will host Athens Bible (17-6) on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

Lawrence County 4, East Lawrence 3: Josh Gaines slugged a three-run homer to pace Lawrence County in a Class 4A, Area 15 victory.

Britt White added two singles and an RBI, while Matthew Pugh and Coty Way each had a single and a run. Radney Wallace added a single.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Lawrence County led 4-2, but East Lawrence had the bases loaded. An East Lawrence single by Jarod Grimes scored one run, but Wallace's throw from center field cut down the tying run at the plate.

Winning pitcher Wes Holley threw a complete game, striking out seven.

Lawrence County and East Lawrence will play again Tuesday at East Lawrence.

Priceville 7, Fairview 2: Priceville's Matt Croft hit a solo home run and finished 2-for-3 for the winning Bulldogs.

Dustin Chambers hit a two-RBI double, while Priceville also got two singles from Rand Hutchison.

Lance Hughes (8-2) pitched the win for the Bulldogs, going six innings and striking out three.

Priceville (27-6, 2-3 in 4A, Area 15) will play at Fairview on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Softball

Lawrence County 5, Florence 4: Sallie Beth Burch slugged a home run and drove in two runs in the Lady Red Devils' win.

Summer Wilkerson and Ashley Pitt each had a double, while Whitney Hood, Kassie Terry, Shea Lane and Morgan Smith each had a single. Pitt drove in two runs, while Hood drove in one.

Wilkerson got the pitching win after working three scoreless innings in relief. She gave up two his and struck out seven.

Austin 7, East Lawrence 3: The Lady Black Bears earned the win with timely hitting.

Ahead 4-3 in the fifth, a two-run homer by Amy Anderson widened Austin's lead to 6-3.

Anderson also had a single in the win, while teammate Lauren Lindsey was 2-for-3, hitting a single and a double and scoring two runs.

Austin's Melissa Thompson had a double and scored a run. Sarah Corn, Rudi Acklin, Ali Barnette and Rebecca Stephenson each had a single. Corn, Acklin and Stephenson each had an RBI. Thompson and Corn each scored a run in the win.

Austin's Elizabeth Gillespie got the win on the mound, striking out two in 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Kristen Hill.

Austin will play at Sparkman on Tuesday.

Decatur 10, Athens 1: Jennifer Lawrence's solo home run with two outs and two strikes in the fourth inning kept the Lady Red Raiders rolling in the win.

Lawrence's homer put Decatur up 5-0. She also had a single in the win, while Whitney Fletcher delivered two singles and a triple.

Also for Decatur, Abi Lott and Mollie Russell each had two singles. Jelisa Thompson, Kara Couch, Meg Whitten and Scarlett Wright had one single apiece for the Lady Red Raiders.

Russell got the pitching win, striking out 11 batters and allowing three hits.

For Athens, Jordynn Sweeney, Tiffinee Eaton and Kayla Blake each had a single.

Decatur (29-12) will host Muscle Shoals on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Danville 5, Addison 2: Danville's Kristen Thompson struck out 12 batters in the win. Thompson also hit a double and blasted a two-run homer with the Lady Hawks leading in the fifth inning.

Nicole Linderman hit two singles for Danville (14-12), while Brittany Atkins and Bethany Evans each had a single. Kristen Sparkman and Mallory George each had an RBI.

West Morgan 7, East Limestone 5: Mikalia Etheredge went 2-for-3 with five RBIs to pace West Morgan. Hannah Harris added a single, an RBI and two sacrifice bunts.

Winning pitcher Lauren Seibert worked a complete game and struck out four.

For East Limestone, McKenzie Crabtree had a double, a single and two RBIs, while Cassandra McKinney added two singles and an RBI. Carly Rhodes tripled, while Danielle Holder, Morgan Franks and Kayla Sneed each had a single. Holder drove in a run.

Sneed pitched seven innings and struck out five.

Tennis

Decatur girls 9, Randolph 0: The Lady Red Raiders shut out their third straight opponent as they improved to 8-1.

Decatur shut out Randolph 10-0 in three singles spots and in all three doubles. Sarah Hodges at No. 2 singles, Emily Suggs and No. 4 and Burgoyne Fite at No. 6 didn't give up a game. Neither did the doubles teams of Angee Stevens and Hodges at No. 1, Mary Virginia Sherrill and Emily Suggs at No. 2, and Sarah Suggs and Fite at No. 3.

At No. 1 singles, Stevens fought off a tough challenge from seventh-grader Shelby Akin 10-6. Sherrill won at No. 3 singles, and Sarah Suggs won at No. 5.

Decatur boys 6, Cullman 3: Playing on the road, Decatur (4-5, 2-3 in Class 5A, Section 6) won four singles matches and two in doubles.

Will Breland won at No. 3 singles, beating Spencer Boozer 10-5. Decatur also got singles wins from Jonathan Rogers (No. 4), Graham Powell (No. 5) and Blake Garrett (No. 6).

Christopher Fite and Chris Harlow won at No. 1 doubles, beating Alex Chaney and Zane Smith 10-8. Powell and Garrett won at No. 3.

Golf

Athens boys 306, Briarwood Christian 306: Playing in the cold and wind at Canebrake Golf Club on Saturday, Joe Higginbotham shot 70 for Athens, followed by teammates Craig Whitt (77), Will Morrow (79) and Brian Chandler (81).

On Monday, Athens played in the Cullman Invitational and finished third out of 13 teams. Higginbotham paced Athens with a 74. Whitt followed with a 77, and Morrow fired an 81.

West Morgan boys 205, R.A. Hubbard 220, East Lawrence 226: Playing the front nine at Deer Run Golf course in Moulton, West Morgan's Justin Poole shot a 40 to lead the field. East Lawrence's best individual score was Colby Buttram's 43, while Ramsee Miller's 47 led R.A. Hubbard.

R.A. Hubbard and Hatton will play at Valley Landing in Courtland on Tuesday.
