Athens' Keenum helps Calhoun to softball sweep
From Staff Reports
Athens High graduate Lacey Keenum helped Calhoun Community College sweep Jeff State in a softball doubleheader Tuesday.
The Lady Warhawks took a 4-3 game 1 win before easing to an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Keenum doubled to bring home former East Lawrence standout Stevie Griffin to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, Griffin's former high school teammate Courtney Terry reached base on an error, then came home when Lee homered, giving Calhoun a 3-2 lead.
The hits kept coming and, eventually, led to another run for a 4-2 advantage. Calhoun (27-9) gave up a run to Jeff State in the fifth, but the Lady Warhawks held off the Pioneers.
Clements High graduate Whitney Mooney singled for Calhoun.
Game 2 was much easier for Calhoun.
The rally got going in the third when Griffin, Terry and Lee came up with three straight doubles, giving Calhoun a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Griffin again doubled. Lee and Jenia Stephenson walked to load the bases, then Kennum blasted a pitch over the right-center field wall for a grand slam and a 6-0 Lady Warhawks lead.
Calhoun added two more runs in the sixth. Terry singled in the inning.
Also getting hits in the second game were Brianna Holt of Athens High and Brittany Norton of East Lawrence.
The Lady Warhawks begin a three-day homestand Thursday against Snead State at 2 p.m. at Wilson Morgan Park.
Calhoun hosts Gadsden State on Saturday and Alabama Southern on Sunday.
